Back cover copy:
Few believed they could do it. During World War II, 350,000 American women joined the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Army Air Corps. Some served on the American home front, while others volunteered to go overseas.

While people disapproved – even family, the women persevered and outshone everyone’s expectations.

Kayleen Reusser, author of books on World War II, has compiled an assortment of stories from interviews with women who served as nurses, cryptologists, and even pilots during the war.

The stories are frank, personal and heartfelt. From helping to tow targets while being shot at with live ammunition to nursing wounded men in France, these women responded wholeheartedly during their country’s time of need and helped to win the war.
