Event Details

Help us celebrate National Library week by sipping on a variety of teas and enjoying light refreshments, while we travel virtually to the United Kingdom.

This will be a one-on-one virtual trip with a tour guide in Durham, England, and will be happening in real-time.

On this virtual tour of Durham, our tour guide will show us the medieval heart of Durham city with an emphasis on the world-renowned Durham Cathedral built by the Normans in 1093. We will also see the associated Durham Castle and other buildings on Palace Green, forming a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we walk down Owengate, we will see a host of other fascinating buildings, including places where the Prince Bishops of Durham fortified their defensive stronghold that would keep out the Scottish invaders for many centuries. Explore some more 'modern' buildings from the Georgian period and visit Durham Market Place to behold the Durham Town Hall, Guildhall, and St. Nicholas Church. Also, gain insights into the life of some notable characters from Durham's past like Count Bourawski - a dwarf violin playing Count from Poland, Jimmy Allen - a horse thief and royal pipe player, and the Marquis of Londonderry - Coal baron aristocrat and scourge of the miners.
